For over 40 years, ClarkPowell has helped Public, Educational, and Government (PEG) channels in North and South Carolina create reliable, future-ready broadcast systems.
We brought that experience to Surry County, where we partnered to build Surry on the Go, a thriving multi-channel government and community video network that allows the county to shoot, edit, and distribute content seamlessly. Using the latest technology, Surry on the Go can now meet viewers wherever they are—at home via cable, through streaming apps, or on the go via mobile.
The reach of Surry’s programming has even extended beyond the county’s borders.
“We’re hearing from people outside Surry County who are tuning in,” said Nathan Walls, Director of Surry on the Go. “That speaks to the real value of what we’ve built here.”
When Surry County set out to create its government channel, it knew it needed reliable equipment and a trusted systems integrator. They also recognized that their needs would grow over time, requiring a solution that could expand with them.
ClarkPowell worked alongside Nathan Walls to bring this vision to life. Walls, a former newspaper reporter, knew the importance of delivering trustworthy local news. “Newspapers are fading, and misinformation spreads quickly online,” he said. “Surry on the Go was designed to fill that gap and provide accurate, accessible news directly from the county.”
To build a professional-grade video production and distribution system, ClarkPowell deployed a complete Cablecast workflow anchored by Cablecast VIO Lite and VIO Lite Omni broadcast servers. The system was designed for seamless content distribution across:
Cable TV – Broadcast in HD on Surry Communications and in SD on Spectrum/ Charter
Streaming apps – Available on Roku, Amazon Fire TV, and Apple TV
Mobile access – Dedicated iOS and Android apps for easy viewing
Live and on-demand content – Available through a branded county app
To support content production, Surry on the Go was equipped with industry-leading tools, including JVC camcorders, Lowell lighting kits, two Dell workstations, and a Studio Network Solutions shared storage system to manage media efficiently.
Expanding & Evolving, Bringing Local News & Government Coverage to Everyone
By 2024, Surry on the Go expanded into two additional channels--Surry on the Go 2 and Surry on the Go 3—with the addition of two more Cablecast broadcast servers. The expansion has enabled Surry County to increase its programming and outreach while maintaining a streamlined workflow.
Nathan Walls assembled a strong team, including award-winning videographer Pete Kulsziski and ClarkPowell, an award-winning systems integrator, to ensure the success of the project.
Ease of scheduling and managing content across multiple platforms was a key factor in the selection of Cablecast. “There’s only one interface for all of our platforms,” said Warren Baker, Post Production Specialist at ClarkPowell. “That makes it incredibly simple and low-maintenance. For a county that wanted a powerful, scalable video system, Cablecast delivered exactly what they needed.”
A Partnership That Lasts
What made this partnership special was helping Nathan and his team build this channel from the ground up and seeing it thrive today. “To see Surry on the Go grow into a multi-channel success is incredibly rewarding for our team at ClarkPowell,” said Lee White, Account Manager at ClarkPowell.
ClarkPowell remains committed to providing continued support well beyond installation. “We don’t just sell equipment and walk away,” White added. “We build lasting relationships—with our customers and our manufacturing partners—so when they need support, we’re there.”
With the power of Cablecast and ClarkPowell’s expertise, Surry County has transformed the way it connects with its communities—leading the way in local government communication and community engagement.
