Serial digital interface (SDI) has been around since the dawn of time and though it’s a great technology, there is new technology out there to get your video from point A to point B efficiently.

Network Device Interface (NDI) is a technology developed by NewTek that moves video and audio over a ethernet network. Plug your NDI device into a switch and make it available to other people on the network and voila your ethernet switch is an ethernet router. It is an inexpensive alternative to many SDI routers. If you don’t have a NDI device, you can use a NewTek Spark appliance that will turn your HDMI, 3G-SDI or 12G-SDI into a network happy NDI signal.

When the pandemic struck, and in the following year, higher education found itself trying to tackle a rapid transition to remote learning with solutions to give students access to new educational technology.

Back in May we sent out a newsletter warning of supply chain delays for the audio-visual industry. Unfortunately, things are getting worse rather than better and, additionally, many industry experts are saying that they expect the delays and shortages to last until 2023.

Why?
There are several reasons causing the delays. First, there are only a few factories in the world that produce the chips and they are virtually all in Asia. When the pandemic hit, these factories closed whole production lines for many months and, when they gradually reopened, they did so with a much-reduced workforce due to having to social distance. Second, the companies also forecasted inaccurately that Global demand would fall due to the pandemic but, as we all know, demand remained high because there was a huge demand for technology to enable workers to work remotely.

In addition, several of the manufacturers have been tooling up to create the latest and greatest chips that are used in mobile devices and there has been less production of the older versions that many consumer electronics devices, Pro AV gear and automobiles rely on. So, as you can see, it has been a perfect storm for the industry…

What can we do?
ClarkPowell continues to track daily the availability of many major components and will communicate with customers at any stage of the procurement or integration phase of a project.

We ask all our customers to understand that equipment availability is going to be an issue for a long time to come and is completely beyond our control. ClarkPowell is delighted to announce that industry veteran Holt Stevens has joined our engineering team in the role of systems designer, and will be based in our headquarters in Winston-Salem, NC.
 
Holt attended Forsyth County Career Education Center before joining the US ARMY Missile Defense School as a Continuous Wave Tracking Radar Technician. He began his AV career in 1990 as an installer and service technician before he assumed a Design Engineer position. Holt has designed systems utilizing large scale mix-minus, combine divide, voice lift and VTC for government and military operations, commercial lecture and meeting room applications and church audio and video systems
 
His systems design work includes the Missile Defense Agency Naval Annex at the Pentagon briefing room, AEGIS Systems auditorium and briefing center at Dahlgren VA and Air Force Material Command Operations Center Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. 

​Recent projects include design build systems for Metlife Insurance, Brighthouse Financial and Parker Poe Attorneys in Charlotte, Charleston and Atlanta that included large meeting rooms with combine divide, voice lift and VTC; multi-use conference rooms, huddle spaces and training rooms.  Design build systems for Lockton Companies included boardrooms, conference rooms, huddle spaces and combine divide training rooms. Systems were located in Kansas City, Chicago, Atlanta, and LA.
 
Holt’s certifications include: Crestron DM-NVX, DMC-D and DMC-E, Extron XTP AV A/V Associate, Biamp Nexia, Audia and Tesira, AVIXA CTS-D and CTS-I. 
 
A native of the Winston-Salem area, Holt enjoys spending time with his wife and Labrador retrievers Woody and Valeria at his property located at Poor Mountain near Wilkesboro, NC.
